WWYWT? Taking it to the streets

May 31, 2012
By

After the last week of Kinect Your Shape and Free weights, I decided today to take it back to the streets for a nice jog especially since the temperature hadn’t reached 85 in the morning for a change. Varying the workout to include weights is important. Your body has to build strength in order to heel after difficult workouts and long work weeks. Since my business involved a lot of shipping, receiving and walking carrying sneakers, it’s important that I take to time to build muscle. In all truth weight training makes a better runner. Obviously running makes a better runner, but when those muscles are stronger those hills aren’t as difficult. My suggestion, buy yourself a couple of 12 to 15 lb weights and begin to implement Sumo squats and lunges for the legs and curls, over head press, tricept extensions and shoulder raises to your workout and you will see the difference.

Temperature: 75 degrees. I was actually postponing a lot of my running routine because the heat was stifling; but today is a great day to get out there and jog.

Terrain: Street, sidewalk and grass and rocks. Not bad today at all. A lot of hills as always with the streets but today there was only one dumb ass driver who was speeding through the suburbs. Needless to say I gave him the death stare, although I wasn’t wearing my glasses so it probably just looked like I was cross eyed.

Distance: According to Google Maps it was 2.3 miles.

Time: 9.54 – 10:20 or 26 minutes. I’m not world class here, but for a big guy that is actually pretty good. When you get to 225+ lbs running 9 minute miles is … okay. It’s not great, but it’s okay.

Soundtrack: Janelle Monae on Pandora. Today was not such a great day for that station. They put a little too much of the British invasion into my day. Adele, Corrine Baily Rae, smh, not very good to run to, but hey I just rolled with it. I only need the music to kind of occupy my mind while running.

WWYWT? Pruning the Roses

May 9, 2012
By

No music today, just the sun, my shears, gloves, raggedy jeans and my sunny I Love California tee shirt. I also had a few power tools for the edging and trimming of the shrubs, but you get the idea. Last week I finished off the week and yesterday, with my Wii Workout. I have also added 30 pushups before bedtime to the repetoire to build a little mass. While 30 push ups doesn’t sound like much, it is actually a great thing to do before bed if you do them slowly and with a lot of control instead of using momentum to carry you through them. Anyway, back to today.

The Workout: 1st 30 minutes I pruned the roses. This gave me a pretty good shoulder workout, wrist and fingers as well as a leg squats and lunges. It also provided me with about 6 pricks from the thick ass thorns on my long stems. I had blood spots up and down my arm, but hey it’s worth it to have my roses come back strong after the first blooms.

Next 15 Minutes: I took out the old trimmer saw and shaped the four shrubs. This was a good arm workout of course.

Next 30 minutes I edged the lawn. This was a back workout and legs since I had to walk slowly around the edge of the yard.

Final 20 minutes I plugged in the blower and got rid of all of the shavings. I didn’t cut the grass since I’m trying to get some thickness to it. Overall it was a very good workout and something a little different. If I could have avoided getting a face full of spider webs when I was pruning this would have been a great workout. However, I really didn’t need the unexpected cardio from running my big ass around the yard trying to get this tiny spider off of my face after putting my whole face through the web. smh

WWYWT? 2.5 miles of Brian McKnight?

May 1, 2012
By

I’m actually just kidding about the Brian McKnight thing, but for some reason I can’t stop laughing at the absurdity of Brian McKnight’s latest Youtube vid… especially since one of my friends from high school brought it up this morning. Dude is on one for real! On to today’s run: Let me show you how your legs work on a 2.5 mile run when you are a big guy. Once again I was in pursuit of my son and his neverending goal of riding standing up. Watching him makes me forget I’m jogging because for the life of me I can’t remember having to learn how to ride a bike standing up. I just remember getting on the bike and automatically jumping hills and curbs.

Temperature: 82 degrees. It’s warm out but there was a small breeze which was great when I was running with the wind, but not so good when I was running against it.

Terrain: The suburban concrete jungle (with weeds, bugs and the non stop supply of lawn dudes chopping the grass.

Distance: According to Google Maps it was 2.5 miles.

Time: 25 minutes I have to stop  answering the phone during runs, but like Jon Coffee “I can’t hep it.”

Soundtrack: Talib Kweli on Pandora. I can definitely listen to the Talib station. Talk about classic material again and again! Rakim, Talib and the most memorable song during the run was Scarface: My Block. People forget how much of lyricist Scarface is. Most motivational track Dead Prez: Way of Life. The video below is not the actual video but it is a perfect representation of the song.

WWYWT? Running the Streets

April 23, 2012
By

Monday morning!!!!!! I hope everyone had a great weekend and you are digging in for another week of work. I also hope you are still rolling on your own personal workout schedules and getting it in! Last week I finished the week with two days of virtual workouts on the Wii and on the Kinect. This week I started with a nice long jog with my son in tow. He rode his bike though, which is still pretty tough.

Temperature: 50 degrees. I’m trying to figure out what happened to the warm weather all of a sudden.

Terrain: The suburban concrete jungle, the skreets, the hood, actually just the sidewalk with moderate hills.

Distance: According to Google Maps it was 2.17 miles. I give myself 2.5 just for the record.

Time: 24 minutes, give or take a phone call. Hey, I’m a business… man.

Soundtrack: Pharoahe Monche channel on Pandora. I think I made a good decision in buying an Android phone finally. Streaming music is the bomb!!!!! I really didn’t know what I was missing.  Dopest song of the run? DWYCK: Gangstarr featuring Nice and Smooth. Talk about a song that was just right for the moment! On that note I have to drop the vid here and leave it up to you. What was your workout today? Leave comments in the bottom if you want.

Stay motivated.
