I use the site to share poetry, book and restaurant reviews, as well as film and business discussions.

ARCH Ad Discussion and Metrics: For the geeks who own a business

a picture is worth… you get it

I wrote an article a few weeks ago, precisely on August 5th, called More Marketing Advice From A Non-Guru Unafraid to Fail. In that article I began discussing PR and marketing as it dealt with my writing and sneaker company. I followed that article up with information added to the ARCH Facebook page. What is all of this about? If you took the time to read the More Marketing article then you know I finally figured out a method to begin getting the brand seen by more people and to begin selling shoes to people outside of the circle of people who typically support me. Well, I am kind of stretching the truth here, people who know you don’t really support you, but they will talk like they will. Sometimes I think people have the best intentions, but maybe life just gets in the way when it comes to actually pulling the trigger on buying something from you (Yep, I’m going to keep telling myself this one).

What I discussed before is that in order for a new company to have any chance at all of being successful, the brand has to sell to people that aren’t familiar with you. The brand has to reach the shopping market, or the people who are looking to buy something similar but haven’t made up their mind yet. I guess the brand can do this locally. I have always said that you conquer your region first, but the funny thing is with clothing or items that are big purchases (meaning over 30 dollars) when people are face to face with you and know you they just don’t tend to take you very seriously. Especially in regard to Memphis where I am based. This is a Nike town and with 2 different Nike stores, people can buy a Nike shoe for the same price as one of my shoes since the stores are discounted so heavily. This makes it almost impossible to sell shoes here. Back to what I was saying, you have to reach the market. I stated that the best way to do this was by attending a trade show. However, I knew that financially this was not a possibility for me, so I had to develop another idea.  I never really specified what I would do exactly, but in short this is what I did. I utilized my online sneaker store as a launch pad and launched my shoes through one of the biggest online shopping sites in the world: Amazon.com.

The steps to getting to this point were not cheap though. I had to first become a a GSN member which allowed me to create my own internationally recognized UPC codes. This allowed me to apply as a brand on Amazon. You can now go to shoes and look under the A section and ARCH shows up as a brand. This is huge considering I do not get enough traffic on my site to actually have an e-commerce presence. After I was able to list my shoes on Amazon and make them able to be searched through keywords and tags in the listing system, I finally settled on utilizing the Ad program through Amazon. The Campaign manager has been an amazing tool and I’ve been posting the stats for the last month. I began running the campaing on July 30th and 31st. The campaign completed on August 30 and 31st. Below is the culmination of the advertising campaing for 1 month. Now if you are business person then you are fully aware that it takes at least 3 months to really see the benefits of a campaign. Well, it used to take that long. Now however, things can go viral overnight and you can actually see growth immediately. This did not happen for me, but the numbers are very inspiring. Enough of that, it’s time to give you what you came for.

Two campaigns: ARCH Casual and ARCH Running from July 30-31 to Aug. 30-31

ARCH Casual featuring The Allen casual shoe in three colors.
Number of ads: 12
Impressions: 354,935
Clicks: 736
CTR: .21%
Total Spend: $21.37
Average CPC: .03 cents
Orders placed through the ads: 1
Product Sales: 60.00
Conversion Rate: .14%

ARCH Running featuring the CG097II running shoe in 4 colors
Number of ads: 24
Impressions: 1,207,254
Clicks: 1767
CTR: .15%
Total Spend: $38.95
Average CPC: .02 cents
Orders placed through the ads: 14
Product Sales: 499.91
Conversion Rate: .74%

Okay so what do all of the numbers up there mean? Consider this, ARCH is an unknown clothing/footwear company. Outside of two really good articles I have never had people give me thousands of dollars or anyone help me to really build this company. I haven’t had any articles in local newspapers and when I post information about ARCH people that know me (except for my man Ant G.!) don’t really share the information with people they know. In general, I was able to implement a marketing plan for August without a budget, without a photo shoot or without real ad copy, and I was able to convert 38.95 and 21.37 for two different campaigns into 560.00 in sales. While this doesn’t pay the rent, as a small company attempting to establish itself, this is an incredible, simply amazing return on investment! What does this mean for you reading this? It means that I am going to keep plugging away with this ad campaign and continue to give you feedback on the growth of the company. It also means that you have a small guide for possibly working on your own dream. I actually think what I am doing will work for writers or clothing companies, or any company looking to sell. I had a lot of fun watching this whole process. Now this does not account for shoes sold outside of the ad program, that is another story and the money for that actually almost matches the total for both campaigns. Very exciting stuff! As always, I hope you enjoyed reading this and I most certainly am interested in getting responses and feedback.

Stay Motivated!

Fall 2012 Lookbook: Early pics from the manufacturer

As usual it is my goal to make sure I keep anyone interested abreast of what’s happening with the company. While the CG097II is selling a greater pace than the Casual shoe, I decided that the early Fall release would be new versions of The Allen casual shoe. I am also working on winterized versions of the CG097II because it would be crazy to not capitalize on the current sales. With that said though here is an early look at the Black denim Allen. Let me know what you think with your likes or comments.

Oh note the subtle changes here: The removal of the quilted lining and the monochrome name on the heel of the shoe creates a more upscale look for the Allen. I think the shoes are turning out perfect. In this pic you can also see a glimpse of the Red Wine and Rust Denim (without the outsole).

Growing while not growing…

Allen Denim Rust currently in production

I recently took a couple of weeks off to enjoy a vacation to the most inspiring and wonderful place on Earth. The fam went to Disneyworld Orlando and although my feet hurt like the writer in Misery after Kathy Bates did her thing with the club, I was still inspired. I was able to step away from my Amazon Sneaker Shop, which is the bread and butter of the company, and I was able to analyze ARCH.

After running Sho-Shot Athletics from 2005 to 2008 and then launching ARCH in 2009 I encountered the same issues as before. I only sold my brand when I was standing in front of someone at a local market, or with SS I sold them packaged into basketball camps. I’ve always had somewhere to sell my shoes until this past year once I learned to really run my Sneaker Shop. Once the sneaker shop became the primary business, I stopped really dedicating the time and thought to promoting and really selling my own line. I’ve been making shoes and if they don’t sell, I basically sit on them or warehouse them at local stores without a marketing plan. Yesterday, I ended all of that. I pulled the shoes from the local stores and although they are still up for sale on the site, I haven’t been promoting them and there isn’t any real traffic on my site (especially now that the Nikes are not on the site).

Going to Disney made me recognize I have really been going through the motions. Without giving away too much, I think I finally figured out why my brand hasn’t done very well. I have not attended any trade shows. Trade shows generate orders and sales. I don’t currently plan to attend any trade shows so how have I rectified this situation? What have I done to potentially change the direction of the brand and get people to buy into what I’m doing here?

Allen Denim Oak scheduled for winter 12

I have created my own connection to the larger market. There are certain things that have to be done to be carried in chains, mom and pop, or large online outlets. I implemented phase one of change by making it possible for my shoes to be searched on Amazon and by retail outlets. This cost approximately 1 thousand dollars. I now have to learn how to use the system, but by making it so that my brand shows up when a person uses the keywords casual, athletic, or other name brand shoes, I will soon be showing up alongside every national brand in the country!!!! This is huge.

On a different level instead of just dumping shoes in local boutiques, I pulled them and I am creating a complete marketing campaign with marketing materials showing Made In Memphis along with the styling. I don’t plan on doing anything with this until next month, but it’s a good start. I also redesigned the ARCH Casual shoe The Allen and it’s fall line. Although I had already made samples, I thought they needed an upgrade and they needed to be defined. The shoe looks less like a skate shoe now and more like a casual lifestyle shoe for cool, mature, men.

In short, by not selling any shoes and growing, I’m growing in a more confident and positive manner. Sometimes a vacation is just what is needed. I hope you have rested and feel re-energized… Stay Motivated

Another Allen Update for Fall 2012: Red Wine

I am attempting to stay on top of these updates for those of you who are following along. A couple of days ago I posted the mock drawings for the Oak, Rust and Night Denim versions of the Allen. I added another color last night at 2am in the morning. Yep I was up that late working… Let’s call it a fit of inspiration, but I decided to do something crazy with my manufacturer. I don’t really wear loud colors but the final Fall 2012 colorway of the Allen will be Red Wine. I am still finalizing the details, but here is a very rough picture of the shoe from the factory. Let me know your thoughts. I won’t make many of these at all. I will also change the material to canvas instead of denim. Then again, I am open to suggestions.

Stay motivated Fam!

ARCH Casual @ KPreSha Boutique in Downtown Memphis

Very cool pic of a gentleman getting casual with the Haze Grey Allen @ KPreSha Boutique

While sells are not going very well, it was nice to get this picture from Kim the owner of KPreSha Boutique located on Main Street in Downtown Memphis. A customer made a choice over Pointer Shoes and Hushpuppies Casual shoe line to buy a pair of the ARCH Casual Allen in Haze Grey. This is always a great feeling when you see someone picking up a pair of your shoes. They look very cool don’t they? Grab your pair by visiting the Collections.

This is the reality of starting a shoe company

Not writing much on this one, I just wanted to stay true to my promise to show you the ins and outs of actually trying to break into the shoe industry. The following pictures are in sequence: CG097II arrival, Box Opening, ARCH Tee shirt arrival and Rumbatime watches. If you have any questions hit me. I am now in the process of opening each individual pair and straightening them out and cleaning each individual pair. It takes about 1 hour to layout 4 pair. Hard but with each pair unpacked, I feel better about everything. Stay motivated

ARCH Casual – Haze Grey Lux Allen makes another appearance

Got a big shout out, well not really but this early rough cut video from San Diego emcee Judah Christ features the ARCH Allen at the beginning of the video. I hope the shoes make the final cut. Right now though check out the video and more importantly check out the message. Can’t Bring Me Down!!!! I might have to turn that into a tee shirt, or a slogan!
