GAME OF THE WEEK
The Forest Hill-Murrah game was all that and a bag of popcorn! The two stars delivered and sent everyone home happy, except maybe the Forest Hill fans as their team suffered a 82-80 loss. Dundrecous Nelson led all scorers with 25 points, including 12 out of the last 13 points for the Mustangs in the pivotal 4th quarter. Gary Love finished with 19 points, and junior guard Trey Felder, whose first name is appropriate, dropped 5 treys on the way to 16 points. Sophomore Andre Stringer had 21 points and at least 11 assists in a losing effort, while Joshua Moore contributed 19 points with at least 5 triples and a spectacular dunk. This game was played at an extremely fast pace, with defense taking the night off. I don't know anyone who will want to play Murrah in March (tournament time) as they have a terrific shooter in Trey Felder, and an offensive powerhouse, Gary Love who has the highest arc I have seen in years, but it's butter! Murrah can surprise people this year if they get it together and play as a team. Forest Hill has nothing to be ashamed about, as they played hard (on the offensive end) and they are gearing up for the stretch run. Dandy Dozen Senior Terrell Kennedy has to realize that the team cannot afford his temper tantrums against a good team. He has good skills around the basket and can probably play the 3 at a D1 school if he loses some weight. That spin move is wicked, and he has a nice touch from 12 to 15 feet. A questionable charge call against 'Dre was the only negative (refs, let the kids decide the game!) of an otherwise great game. The popcorn was ready.
NEWS AND NOTES
The best tournament for the Martin Luther King holiday weekend was finalized at the last minute! Lanier will be the home of 3 main event games featuring Noxubee County, with the top junior in the state, Shaunessy Smith, playing 7th ranked Wingfield Falcons with 6'2 senior Chris Wallace. The second game of the afternoon may take game of the night honors, as Raleigh Egypt High from Memphis TN battles the Division 5A kings Provine Rams, featuring 6'4" senior Scottie Haralson. This promises to be a war because I know Raleigh's not driving all the way from Memphis to get their tail handed to them, but Provine won't be in a hospitality state of mind. After all that, the last game features the number 1 and 2 teams in the state going head to head, Starkville and Lanier! This is a matchup fans here have been waiting on for years!! It's going down on a day in which we celebrate a man who was about peace, equality, and fellowship. Let's keep all three factors in mind as we treat ourselves to a great day of hoops! The first game begins at 3:00 p.m. Getcha popcorn ready. (I guess you can tell I'm a Terrell Owens fan, minus the crying like a little beyotch!!)
More information will be coming soon regarding the High School/JUCO Showcase in March. This showcase is ONLY for the ballplayers who are serious about playing for a college. Fellas, if you don't have a scholarship in hand by March or April, you can't be too choosy about your options. In my experience, it is VERY hard to obtain a athletic scholarship and/or grant to ball at the next level. Therefore, if you come to this camp, you are saying that if a school from the south, west, north or east offers, you are ready. There will be information packages given to the local colleges here, but coaches from afar are liking the talent that the 'SIP is producing, and for some, it's ALL about getting that education. The camp will be held after the state tournaments, and the fee will be miniscule (meaning small). That's why you have to go to college, if you are offered a free ride or grant to play. More information will be posted in the near future.
I found out that some D1 coaches from MAJOR programs were checking Scottie Haralson out these past few days. All I can say is 'BOUT TIME! This boy is legit, 6'4 with crazy range, power forward body with guard skills, hops, and best of all, great attitude. Did I mention that this brother has a GPA of over 3.0? And I might be selling him short on that. My advice to Scottie if one of those D1s offer, take it! You can play at that level, kid. For real.
Later,
Coach
