The early morning session as well as the after lunch session began with clinics administered by Bishop’s boys’ coach and Athletic Director Tom Tarantino, who worked the girls into a good sweat while employing some excellent hands-on teaching.
After the morning drills the players were split into eight teams.
They then competed round-robin style with each team getting one game during each session for a total of two games.
We used the same evaluation system as we employ in the ESPN RISE CalHiSports.com Girls of Summer rankings where last year four girls tied with a 14.50 ranking
While none of the mostly underclass girls at the Elite 100 Camp were anywhere near that level, the most impressive and surprising performances were from a freshman and a junior.
Tia Dixon, a 5-7 freshman from San Diego High, with quick feet, spin moves, excellent ball-handling and a more than decent outside shot tied with junior 5-7 guard Yvonte’ Neal from Eastlake. Both received 10.85 rankings for tops in the camp.
Neal, who impressed everyone, particularly Tarantino throughout the day with her hard play, was the highest rated girl in the camp midway thorough her second game when she went down in a heap and hyper extended her knee.
She did not return to the game and the trainer told us she probably was done. After over a half-hour on the table getting treatment, Neal amazed everyone by accepting her position in the top 20 game we chose along with Jeff Harper, National Director of Phenom Basketball.
What was even more incredible was even with a taped knee Neal took over in the all-star game and finished with 15 points, six rebounds and four steals to lead the Gray squad to a 66-55 victory over Black.
Elite 100 Camp at the University of San Diego

Almost 100 girls, ranging from uncommitted seniors, all the way down to a sixth-grader who wasn’t afraid to mix it up with the older girls, gathered Sunday, March 29 at the University of San Diego for the Elite 100 Camp put on by affable Bishop’s girls’ coach Marlon Wells.
The one-day event gave us an opportunity to evaluate some of the up-and-coming talent in the San Diego area as well as some girls from other parts of Southern California.

Yvonte Neal holds the top spot!
Dixon led the Gray with a game-high 16 points and although she had a slightly higher ranking in the round-robin portion, Neal was more dominant in the skills portion as well as the top 20 game.
Neal was also the top defender at the camp, was constantly on the floor for loose balls (how she got hurt) and played at full throttle whenever in action throughout the nine-hour camp.
Although both received identical rankings, only one girl could be “best of camp” and Harper agreed with our choice of the hard-nosed Neal, who could be an impact player at the next level.
Several other girls showed significant prowess including three eighth graders, 6-2 Kymber Hill from a San Diego middle school, 5-10 Elizabeth Smith-Carpenter from a San Diego middle school and 5-8 guard Kelsey Plum from Poway.
Keyahndra Cannon, a 5-7 freshman from Mission Bay (San Diego) who scored 40 points in a game last season, also impressed.
Others worth noting who made the top 20 game and their year of graduation are: Shay Young (Mt. Miguel, Spring Valley, 2012); Leona Garrett (Imperial, 2010); Sarah Guerrero (Sweetwater, National City, 2009); Callie Rhoads (Poway, 2010), Tabitha Vigen (Yucca Valley, 2011), Cameron Jones (Norco, 2011); Alexis Harris (Bishop’s, 2012); Sherika Miller (West Hills, Santee, 2010), Danielle Miller (Mt. Miguel, 2011); Taylor Gomez (Muir, Pasadena, 2010); Jermandi Daniels (Muir, Pasadena, 2010); Elizabeth Hartnett (Rosary, Fullerton, 2009), Nicole Fountain (Mt. Miguel, 2010); Marilyn Naderhoff (West Hills, 2010); Ashlee Guay (Our Lady of Peace, San Diego, 2011); Myishia Watkins (Mt.
