McKinley High Jamboree
Location: Capitol Middle
Istouma 60
Desire St. Academy 25
Both Istrouma and DSA started out very sloppy, with only a 9-7 lead with about 4:30 left Istrouma turned it up a little just before the half led by a 3 pointer from the corner by The Roux's #9 ranked Sr. Josh Devose, followed by several layups in transition by Devose, #4 ranked 2010 player by the Roux Ronald Magee, and 2012 Freshman and Roux top 3 G Darius Johnson. In the second half it was all Istrouma. Defense was the key for Coach Dotston’s young Indian squad as they locked up and held DSA to only 9 points in the second half led by a total team defensive effort led by Sr’s Devose, all-district player Dexter Bryant, Magee, Knox and 2010 F Stephen Jackson. Istrouma proved too much for a over matched DSA squad that had only one starter while their football team is in the playoffs.
Istrouma will open up there season Monday night at home vs. Helen Cox before traveling to the Woodlawn tournament on Thursday.
Glen Oaks 34
Scotlandville 28
Scotlandville started the game off very strong as they converted on several early Glen Oaks miscues. The Roux’s #2 ranked 2010 player Brian Williams and #1 2011 player Tre Drye seemed to be out of sync early as neither shot well or finished at the rim to well. Scotlandville controlled the game the whole first half behind strong inside play of The Roux's #5 2010 player F JJ Thomas and solid guard play from their Sr’s. #20 and #1(please email us their names so we can mention them) SMHS led Glen Oaks by about 4 at the half. In the Second half, Glen Oaks looked more of a Harvey Adger coached team as their full court pressure defense forced several turnovers led by stifling defense that started up front with the guards in The Roux's #10 Ranked Sr. Trevor Kendrick, and Jr’s Andre Scott and The Roux #6th ranked player PG Brandon Johnson. In the second half Williams and Drye showed signs of why they were and are 2 of the top players in the city and state as they finished with several tip in baskets and put backs. This could be a special year for the Panthers of Glen Oaks.
They will get a quick start early this season as they play McKinley on Tuesday night at Capitol Middle and then travel to the Woodlawn tourney on Thursday and play a very good Helen Cox Cougar team of Coach Tyrone Mouzon and led by Soph. G Brocton Bush and Sr. 6’6 G Taj Givens. Should be a great tournament. Scotlandville will open up with Capitol on Tuesday and then Reserve Christian on Thursday at Woodlawn.

I got to this game at halftime after traveling from Capitol Middle so I pulled a double duty for “The Roux” last night. This was a very good defensive basketball game. Woodlawn’s guards are solid. They play very well on the ball and defend well. They shot the ball well and defended. 2010 F Braylon Lazare played well. He is coming along nicely. All of his work came around the rim off of nice post moves and grabbing offensive boards and put backs. St. Pauls led most of the game that I was there but behind a couple 3’s by a Jr. #30(please send us his name) and buckets by Lazare, Woodlawn would pull within 1 with about 10 seconds left. St. Paul’s missed a free throw and Woodlawn grabbed the ball and crossed halfcourt and called a time out. After the T.O. Class of 2009 Roux #8 ranked player Brandon Burns would put up a 3 that barely hit rim, Lazare grabbed the rebound and pivoted with elbows out and put up what would be the game winner only to have it negated with a charge call which cost Woodlawn the game. I will give Woodlawn their credit, they looked pretty good last night and could contend for district and surprise people this season.
Woodlawn will open up Tuesday vs. Lee High and then host one of the best tournaments in the Capitol City as Helen Cox and Reserve Christian come to town.
Lee 41
Zachary 35
Zachary started the game off really strong as they opened up with a Class of 2009 G Mason Leggett steal and thunderous 2-hand dunk but after that highlight it was all Lee High. Led by very good guard play, lock down defense, and an intensity and passion that the Patriots have never had, Lee High gave the Bronco’s all they could handle and then some. Zachary seemed to struggle shooting the ball last night as they try to force too many shots. There are 3 bright spots I seen in the Bronco’s and they are Mason Leggett and 2009 G Philip Carey will have a great season this year as both showed signs of being very good players. The second is that their best shooter, Tm Losavio didn’t play. With him that adds an element that will help them out and have Carey and Leggett not have to force so much. The last bright spot is that they will soon get the rest of their team when football is over. I think Zachary will take 3rd in district again behind Glen Oaks and Zachary.
Zachary High will open up the season at home Monday night with Central and then off to the Wedge Kyes Tourney at Baker High which is the longest running tourney in the state going on now for the 56th year. Lee High will open up with Woodlawn on Tuesday.
