Saturday March 15th
16u League Play
On Saturday, several 16u Roux area teams faced off at Family Christian Academy for the first league play of the spring/summer season. All of the games, with the exception of one, were very competitive and sloppy. Sloppy play is the norm when you are throwing players on the court when they have only had only one or two practices together since finishing their high school seasons. However, the athletic competitiveness of the players kept the games exciting, and the play of several of the areas future stars made the time spent at the gym worth while.
The day started off with the Baton Rouge Bearcats facing the Slidell Hawks. This was a tight game all the way with Slidell’s athleticism giving them the edge over the Bearcats by a score of 49-47. The Bearcats were led in the game by the shooting and slashing of Catholic High Soph Kevin Caire and his 17 points.
The second game of the day was a feature match up between the Bluechip Ballers and the Northshore Shockers. Northshore was competing without the services of Ponchatoula’s Matt Derenbecker who did not play due to personal reasons. However there were still plenty of solid players on both squads which provided for a close and sloppy game. The game was a back and forth game which was finally won by the Ballers by a score of 49-43. The Ballers had a balanced attack with eight players scoring in the game, led by Christian Life’s Patrick Robinson who had 10 pts, 6 reb, and 2 blks and McKinley’s Jon Bond who only had 2 pts but also provided 5 rbs, 3 asst, and 2 blks. The Shockers were led by Javeon Walker and Maurepas’ Keith Fleming who both finished with 9 points.
In the Ballers second game they defeated the Bearcats by a score of 56-44. Once again the Ballers provided a balanced scoring attack as nine players scored and seven had 6 or more points. The Ballers again were led by Robinson who finished with 12 pts 4 reb and Port Allen’s Tyler Washington who added 6 pts, 5 reb, 4 asst and a steal. The Bearcats hung close thanks to the hot outside shooting of Catholic High’s Tanner Breaux who finished with 20 pts while nailing 5 3pts.
The Bayou Flames began their day with a blow out win over the LA Legends behind Glen Oaks’ Trey Drye’s 14pts and Brian Williams 19 pts. These two post players were complimented by some outstanding perimeter shooting as Southern Lab’s Michael Harrell and Nico Talbert led a group of guards who dropped 6 3pt shots in the game to help the Flames to a 69-35 win. The Flames second game was a tough overtime game vs the Bearcats. Brian Williams and Trey Drye each had 12 pts as they pulled out a 47-46 victory. The Bearcats were once again led by Caire with 13 pts and Pointe Coupe Central’s Ivory Slaughter who finished with 14 pts.
The Shockers other two games were both wins over the Slidell Hawks and the LA Legends. The Shockers beat the Hawks by a score of 56-44 and the Legends 65-62. Ponchactula high PG Javeon Walker scored 17 pts in each of the games to lead the Shockers. In the game against the Legends the Shockers finished with 4 players in double figures and had a 26 point 4th quarter to comeback and gain the victory.
Overall, the games were sloppy at times but provided these teams with good starts to their seasons. These games are always good for allowing players to get used to playing with one another and used to playing the type of ball played on the AAU/Travel Ball Circuits. I wish all teams luck on their season and hope that these summer coaches will help these athletes improve on their games.
