MORE QUICK NOTES FROM THE ARK
The Devils vs The Mustangs
High School Sports
This was going to be the year that WMHS (West Memphis High School) would have loved to go undefeated and land in the record books 30-0 or whatever-0 but the Forrest City Mustangs needed a victory to hang their hats on. The Mustangs got the win that they needed Tuesday night with a 66-59 win over their former conference rival West Memphis Blue Devils at Mustang Arena. Forrest City made the plays that they needed down the stretch to ensure and close out the win which served as a little payback for the 74-49 handed to them by the Blue Devils two weeks ago. Tusday's win was the first loss of the season for West Memphis, who falls to 6-1 on the year. Forrest City's senior forward Gavin Glanton led the way with 16 points while senior guard Jessie Mitchell had 14 points, including 3 3-pointers. Jim Bailey, who has come along over the past four games added 11 points and Henry Henderson, who had 21 in the first meeting against WMHS, settled for 8 points. University of Arkansas signee Anthony Borden led the Blue Devils in scoring with 17 points and Jonathan Fitzgerald added 12 points.
The Blue Devils led 15-12 after the first quarter but it was all Forrest City from that point on as the Mustangs (2-4) took the lead 26-25 at the half. Down by 10 going into the 4th quarter, the Blue Devils didn't have enough fire to pull it out. Next for the Blue Devils is the Blue Devil Classic, which begins on Dec. 12 at home in the Lehr Arena.
Junior High Action
The Wonder Golden Lions defeated the Marion Patriots, 63-61, in a hard-fought game by both of the ball clubs. It came down to the wire between these two. With 10 ticks left in the ball game and the score knotted at 61, Freshman guard Dominic Tolbert stole the ball and found a streaking Mario Jones and Jones hit the game winning shot. Freshman Mario Jones and Jalen Jackson combined for 35 of the team's points, Jones with 18 and Jackson with 17 points, 5 blocks, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists. The Lions (6-0) will be back in action 12/6/08 against Osceola at 3:30 p.m.
